Step 1
Hand training a lovebird is a long and painstaking process that requires patience from the owner. The success of domestication depends largely on the age of the bird. It will be much easier to accustom a very young parrot to the hands than an older individual. The longer a bird lives in an aviary or flock, the more wild it will be in relation to humans. Lovebirds who have experienced abuse are difficult to tame.
Step 2
The parrot's cage should be high, as lovebirds do not like to bend over them. The first few days after purchase, leave the bird alone, do not disturb it unnecessarily. Talk to your parrot in a calm and even voice, calling him by name. It is best to start taming the lovebird a week after it has been mastered in the house. The bird should no longer be afraid of your presence and approach to the cage. In this case, the cage should be lowered at face level so that the parrot can watch you. Do not climb into the cage unnecessarily, do not encroach on the personal space of the pet.
Step 3
If there are other animals in the house, restrict their access to the lovebird's room. Talk to your parrot for at least forty minutes a day. The taming process should begin by feeding the parrot a treat. Walk slowly to the cage with your pet, start talking affectionately, offer a slice of apple or carrot through the twigs. When the bird begins to peck at the treat, gently open the door and offer to taste the apple right from your hand. If the effect is achieved, transfer the piece of fruit to the palm of your hand. To get the treat, the lovebird will have to stand with both paws on your palm. Try not to make sudden movements so as not to frighten off the bird. The lovebird should feel completely safe on your hand.
Step 4
Over time, when the parrot gets used to eating from the hand, let him fly and try to treat outside the cage. And since communication with the owner gives the lovebird great pleasure, sooner or later he will begin to climb onto your shoulder and sit on your hand even without a treat. In no case yell at the bird, and do not try to force him to do something by force, otherwise the result will be the opposite. And remember, the lovebird is a helpless and sweet creature whose fate is entirely in your hands.
