Step 1
By means of measurements, coupled with a general inspection, any wild bird caught is assessed in order to clarify mainly the sex and age of the bird. It happens that the size of certain parts of the body helps to more accurately determine the species identity than the general appearance of the specimen.
Step 2
Domestic decorative birds, including parrots, must be measured at exhibitions, as well as during breeding work. In modern ornithology, six main types of bird measurement are accepted. Take the parrot in your arms to take measurements. Let your assistant arm himself with a measuring ruler, tape and compasses.
Step 3
First, measure your body length with your head. Lay the parrot horizontally on its back and place a ruler. Measure from the tip of the beak to the anus. Measurement to the tip of the tail will indicate the overall length of the body.
Step 4
The second measurement is the wing length. Turn the recumbent parrot to one side. Press a ruler against the folded wing and measure from the wrist fold to the tip of the longest wing feather.
Step 5
The third dimension is the length of the tail. Lay the bird on its belly and gently straighten it or, if the parrot is small, inflate the upper tail. The place where the tail feathers enter the skin should be exposed. Measure from this point to the end of the longest tail feathers.
Step 6
Beak length. Hold the parrot in your hands. Measure in a straight line from the tip of the beak to the forehead where feathering begins on the ridge. You can also measure from tip to nostril. Specify the option in the records.
Step 7
The next step is to measure the length of the tarsus. Carefully feel the articular cavities between the shin on the bird's paw and the phalanges of the toes. Measure this segment and write down the result.
Step 8
Finally, with the sixth measurement, determine the wingspan of the parrot. To do this, spread the wings to the sides as wide as possible and measure the distance between the extreme points of the wings. This measurement is usually taken for large to medium sized birds.
