Some parrot owners keep houseplants in the same room with them and do not even suspect that they can be fatal for their pets. Before purchasing any home flower, make sure it is safe so as not to expose your parrot's life to an invisible threat.
Plant poisoning
The main symptom of parrot poisoning with a houseplant is an upset of the gastrointestinal tract, which is accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea. The bird refuses to feed, becomes lethargic, and undigested grains can be seen in its droppings. If this happens to your parrot, give it an absorbent drug immediately and take it to your veterinarian as soon as possible.
Try to shield any houseplant from the parrot's cage with curtains or blinds to hedge against unforeseen problems.
To get the bird to take the medicine, crush it into the drinker, add it to the moistened feed or mix it with water by dropping it into the beak from a syringe with the needle or pipette removed. As an absorbent, ordinary activated carbon or drugs such as Enterosgel or Enterodez, which can be bought at any pharmacy, are well suited.
Plants poisonous for parrots
First of all, parrots cannot be in the same room with such representatives of the aroid family as Dieffenbachia, Anthurium, Alocasia, Zamioculcas, Zantedeschia, Monstera, Taro, Spathiphyllum, Syngonium, Epipremnum and Philodendron. These plants have very diverse elements of excretory tissue, as well as protective properties - when a parrot approaches them, their poisonous juice can cause swelling of the mucous membrane of the mouth and larynx.
In case of contact with the eyes, the juice secreted by plants poisonous for parrots can provoke conjunctivitis and cause irreversible changes in the cornea.
Plants of the euphorbia family carry no less danger to parrots - croton, jatropha, actually euphorbia and akalifa itself. They contain euphorbin, which causes very severe poisoning, accompanied by non-healing burns, ulcers, inflammation of the mucous membranes and dysfunction of the gastrointestinal tract.
Careful attention should be paid to such representatives of the amaryllis as gipperastrum, clivia, eucharis, hemantus and hymenokallis. They contain mucus, which, if damaged, flows out and poisons the body of an unwary parrot with its poisonous substances.
It is not recommended to keep at home and bright plants from the Solanaceae family - brovallia, decorative pepper, brunfelsia, brugmansia, solandra, fragrant tobacco, dope, belladonna or petunia. They contain alkaloids that cause nausea, vomiting, drowsiness and damage to the central nervous system in parrots.
Of conifers, a yew tree can be dangerous for a parrot.
