Have you decided to have a budgerigar at home or are you going to make such a gift to your friends? And you are worried about a reasonable question: how to determine the sex of a parrot? After all, if you want to teach a bird to speak, then it is better to take a male, and if you already have a wavy male, then only a female will suit him. Parrots are motley people and it is simply impossible to distinguish between males and females by color.
Instructions
Step 1
Take a close look at the birds offered to you. The main sign by which you can determine the sex of a parrot is wax. It is a ridge in the upper part of the beak and the nasal openings are located in it.
Step 2
If you are picking up a young bird (up to one and a half months), it will be more difficult to determine the sex, because waxes in small females and males are always light: pinkish or almost white. At the age of 2 to 4 months, the color of the wax beetles in birds begins to acquire a shade. In males, it becomes pinkish-lilac, and later acquires a rich, bright blue color. In females, the color of wax beads is uneven: whitish-blue or beige with white spots. A distinctive feature of females at this age is a light edging around the nostrils. With age, girls' waxes turn brown. The paws of males are often bluish, while in females they are pink.
Step 3
Try to determine the sex of the bird by behavior. Young males are always more active than females. They curiously explore new surroundings, bully with other parrots, make noise and sing longer songs. Thus, they try to attract attention to themselves. The behavior of females is calmer. The girls' songs are short and uncomplicated.
Step 4
Keep in mind that sometimes during periods of severe stress or moulting, the color of females' waxes can change from brown to blue. Do not worry if instead of Kesha you end up with Masha, females can also be taught to speak. However, if you are acquiring a partner for your pet, it is better not to make mistakes. Parrots are quite temperamental birds and can start a quarrel with a fight.
