Otherwise, the Tasmanian devil is called a marsupial devil. This amazing animal from the island of Tasmania belongs to the order and family of carnivorous marsupials. The genus, as well as the species, of this animal is called the marsupial devil.
The animal has a dense body structure. The fur of the animal is usually colored from dark brown to black. The size of the Tasmanian devil can be compared to a medium-sized dog. Females of this marsupial animal have a small pouch like a kangaroo.
As the name implies, the devil lives on the island of Tasmania, which is located off the coast of Australia. About six hundred years ago, animals settled in Australia itself, but from there they were driven out by the Dingo dogs brought by the aborigines.
The marsupial devil feeds on small birds, snakes, insects, and amphibians. If necessary, the animal can gnaw plants and roots. Mostly, however, the Tasmanian devil feeds on carrion.
Devils are solitary animals, they hunt and live independently of their relatives. At the same time, the marsupial devil does not build himself a special nest or burrow, but waits out the day in any convenient place, be it someone else's empty burrow or thick bushes. Together, these animals can gather only if they eat a common large prey or mate.
In a situation when nothing threatens the Tasmanian devil, he gives the impression of a lethargic and slow animal, but if necessary, he can reach speeds of up to 12-15 km / h.
This type has its own unique feature - a specific disease "devil's facial swelling". This is a disease that is only seen in Tasmanian devils, it affects the area around the mouth with tumors. These tumors subsequently disrupt the animal's perception of the surrounding world, which is why the animal cannot get food and dies. The Devil's Facial Tumor is the scourge of the devil species, killing about half of the population.
