Step 1
Read the order on the timing of hunting of the administration of the region in which you are going to fish muskrat. Usually the hunting season for fur-bearing animals opens in October-November and lasts all winter. But, according to experts, the best time to catch muskrat is February. Firstly, by that time, muskrat cubs are already growing up, and, therefore, it becomes possible to catch a larger number of individuals. Secondly, muskrat fur is of the best quality during this period. Obtain the required permit or enter into an agreement with the Society of Hunters and Fishermen in the region.
Step 2
Use traps # 1 and # 0 to catch muskrat. They are quite light and will not drag the wounded muskrat to the bottom of the reservoir. Please note that an animal trapped in a trap can gnaw off its own paw to get rid of the trap.
Step 3
Set up a trap at the entrance to the muskrat burrow or near the so-called stern hut (usually driftwood near the river bank). If you decide to catch the animal in winter, identify the under-ice paths along which the muskrat most often moves. After - find a mink, cut an entrance into it, set a trap and mask the entrance with snow. After the mink is frozen, the animal will have no choice but to leave it and … get into a trap. Check the trap sites 2 times a day - early in the morning and late in the evening.
Step 4
Set a large number of traps in the fall during daylight hours where a significant number of these animals live. Remember the places where you set the traps. Check them first before dusk, and then every 2 hours until dawn.
Step 5
If the features of the shore of the reservoir do not allow catching muskrat (for example, because of reeds), make false feeding huts from reeds or the same reeds. Set traps. The muskrat is a very curious animal, and it will definitely want to ask what is on the new island.
Step 6
Try fishing the muskrat with a top. This method is suitable for both autumn and winter hunting. Make a top with wire, twigs, or a fine mesh. Place them along the shore or cut a hole in the ice. The tops are usually set not far from the feeding huts, on the muskrat trails or directly in the huts.
Step 7
Hunt this animal using a hunting weapon, but remember that your unsuccessful shot can spoil the skin of the muskrat. It is best to use a small bore shotgun. You only need to aim at the head.
