Step 1
Prepare a crate for your ferret before bringing it home. He will quickly get used to the new conditions, if for the first time he is settled in a limited area. Place a closed house, feeder, drinker and tray in the cage. A ferret that was born in an apartment can be kept in a cage for two weeks. It will take longer for a wild animal to adapt.
Step 2
Keep your ferret out of the cage for the first two to three days. Remove the tray (it must be washed every day), change the contents of the feeder and drinker. Talk to your pet and call him by name. Try to keep your voice calm and gentle. Don't be angry if the ferret bites you in the process. You do not need to punish him, but you can make a remark in a stern voice. Ferrets are very good at distinguishing intonation. If you are not bitten, praise the animal and give it a treat.
Step 3
Start accustoming to the tray from the first days. The younger the ferret, the better. Some animals immediately understand where they should fulfill their natural needs. However, most ferrets do not immediately begin to navigate the new environment. Observe which corner your pet puts the toilet in. The ferret will never defecate where it eats or sleeps, so there is little choice in the cage. If, nevertheless, the ferret did his business somewhere else - do not punish him. Make it clear that you don't like this. Place the excrement in the tray and let it sit for a while to retain the odor.
Step 4
Ferrets do well outside the cage. Before transferring your pet to free content, tidy up the room. Ferrets are very fond of chewing on wires, so it's best to remove them. You will not be able to wean your pet from the desire to dig everything, so it is better to remove indoor plants.
Step 5
In a small room, you can limit yourself to one tray. If the room is large, then it is better to take two, because ferrets are not very patient and will not look for a toilet throughout the apartment. If the animal has done its business in the wrong place, let him know that this behavior does not suit you. The ferret can be shaken by the scruff or put in a cage for half an hour, accompanied by a strict remark. Before doing this, take the excrement into a litter box and place the ferret in it. This should be done immediately after the "offense". Wash the floor thoroughly and treat with an odor-eliminating compound.
Step 6
Teach your ferret to respond to a nickname. Call him by name every time you pick him up and stroke him. The nickname should evoke positive emotions. When you convert your ferret to free content, call your ferret every time you feed or play with it.
Step 7
Do not scold your ferret if it is hiding food. This is his natural need, from which you cannot wean the animal. Take it as it is. Ferret saliva contains substances that prevent food from spoiling for a long time. If this habit is unpleasant for you, do not feed your pet large chunks. It is better to give food in the form of minced meat.
Step 8
Train your ferret to use the harness. He will be happy to walk with you. First, put on the harness at home and let the animal walk around in it for a while. It may very well be that he will not immediately like this subject. If the ferret starts to get nervous, don't insist. Give him a treat and take off his harness. The next day, repeat the procedure, increasing the time.
Step 9
Communicate with your ferret as much as possible. These animals love to play. Do not deny them this. Also, they are very curious and will be interested in all of your business. Try to provide your pet with a safe environment.
