Sex in rats can be discerned as early as 4 days after their birth. But these babies are not usually sold yet, since they eat their mother's milk. Remember that at this age you can be wrong. If you want to distinguish between rat pups by sex, then this can only be done by comparison. While the rat pups are still living with their mother, it is undesirable to take them in hand, since she can be confused by an extraneous smell, and she will refuse to feed her children.
Step 2
In rat pups at the age of 2 weeks, it can be seen that the nipples are not visible in males, while in females the mammary glands are clearly visible on the still slightly overgrown belly with fur. But there are different cases, sometimes males have well-developed nipples, so this method can only be used as an auxiliary one.
Step 3
Place the rat on your hand so that the genitals are clearly visible. In females, the distance between the anus and the entrance to the vagina is less than in males. Also, in male rats, you can notice two dark spots, which are located almost at the tail, with age they will begin to increase.
Step 4
At about 4 weeks from the date of birth, males are clearly different from the opposite half. At this age, they clearly have testes, which reach a large size by 2-3 months. The genitals of the "strong" half are located closer to the tail. For this very reason, some people do not want to acquire males. Although it has been noticed that they are somewhat calmer than females and bite less often.
Step 5
If you cannot tell the gender on your own, ask the seller to explain it to you. Do not buy rats of different sexes from the same litter, sooner or later blood will mix and sick babies may be born. If you want to buy two rats, but of the same sex, it is better to buy females, men can fight during puberty. When you need one animal, the best option would be to purchase a male.
