When planting a snake at home, each owner must remember very important information. Wildlife and store pets are different types of snakes. If you have caught an exotic creature and placed it in a terrarium, it will be almost impossible to provide a natural habitat for it. Snakes, which are sold in specialized stores, are originally adapted to live at home.
Diet of domestic snakes
Keeping domestic snakes is a minimum of hassle. These reptiles are among the most unpretentious exotic pets. When purchasing a snake in a store, you should immediately consult a specialist about the diet of its feeding. Some species of snakes have different food preferences.
There are rare cases when domestic snakes refused to eat for a whole year.
The main thing that every owner of a domestic snake should understand is that these reptiles are predators. They will have to be fed mainly with animal feed. Rats, frogs, mice, fish are the usual food for a snake, which it needs for normal development. The size of food, for example, of a mouse, must be selected in accordance with the size of the snake's head.
It is not worth feeding a domestic snake with live rodents. The fact is that during swallowing, a mouse can bite a reptile. If you do not notice a serious wound in time, then such irresponsibility on the part of the owner can cost the pet's life. In the event that the owner of the reptile still wants to treat the snake with live prey, then the rodent must be prepared for feeding. The largest teeth are cut off to the animal and the spine is blocked with a sharp jerk by the tail.
The domestic snake needs constant hydration. Experts recommend spraying the reptile's body with water at room temperature several times a day. The liquid in the terrarium must be constantly present, the drinker must be changed daily.
Domestic snake feeding mode
It is recommended to feed a domestic snake once a week. Young individuals are characterized by an increased appetite, and adult snakes can refuse to eat even for several months in a row. For example, during the moulting period, the reptile does not show any interest in the offered treats at all.
It has been noticed that when changing owners or moving to a new terrarium, snakes can arrange prolonged fasting.
It is noteworthy that a domestic snake can give a signal to its owner if it gets hungry. The pet starts making clicking sounds and restlessly moving around the terrarium. You need to feed the snakes separately. Otherwise, reptiles can fight with each other, even because of the same food. In addition, snakes are capable of showing aggression even with the slightest movements of the owner's hands, if they decide that they are trying to take prey from them.
It is best to buy food for your pet snake at the store. If you catch a wild mouse and feed it to your pet, then the likelihood of a reptile contracting a serious infection is very high. You may not be able to identify, for example, a poisoned rodent. The snake, after such a treat, may die.
