If large birds move at a speed of up to 80 km / h, then small ones - at a speed of no more than 30 km / h. They fly in several stages with breaks. Small birds are able to cover up to 4000 km.

In Russia, migratory birds wintering in the south include storks, quails, kestrels, woodcocks, barn swallows, white wagtails, songbirds, warblers, warblers, flycatchers, rooks, finches and some others.

It is interesting to observe how sedentary birds survive the winter. The most striking example is the black grouse. The grouse wintering place is birch forests, since they feed on birch buds. In severe frosts, these amazing birds burrow into the snow. In such an impromptu shelter, black grouse hide from blizzards and frosts.

Small birds inhabiting winter forests are tits, bullfinches, tap dancers. Tits are quite unpretentious and can find food for themselves at any time of the year. They feed on insects and their eggs, tree bark, moss. Bullfinches are usually inhabited by aspen and birch forests. They are content with plant-based food. Tap dancers move in flocks through the winter forests. Their main delicacy is alder cones.

The hazel grouses, like no other birds, are adapted for long wintering. Every year, a fringe of horny scales grows on their fingers, thanks to which they can hold even on icy branches.

White partridges have their own winter outfit: by the onset of cold weather, their legs are covered with feathers, which allows them to easily move on loose snow. The partridge with the same ease avoids meeting a predator and gets its food.

Jays and a number of other birds gather reserves for the winter throughout the year. They drag acorns, caterpillars, grains, etc. to wintering places.
