Breeding of turkeys is becoming more and more popular. But some farmers are not ready to purchase and raise this bird, referring to the fact that it is weak and does not survive well. In fact, turkey poults require proper care and more attention than other types of birds.

Step 1
If you seriously decide to start raising turkey poults, then you need to start caring for them from the first days of life. They are chosen for growing mobile chicks that keep well on their feet, have a retracted yolk, and a scarred umbilical cord. Fluff and anus should be clean and free of any discharge. In small turkey poults, thermoregulation is poorly developed, therefore, chicks are planted in a pre-heated room. The air temperature should be 25-27 degrees, it is gradually reduced.
Step 2
The first two weeks of life, humidity should remain at 72-75%, then 60-70%. Chicks are very sensitive to high levels of poisonous gases in the air. The amount of ammonia should not exceed 5 mg / m3, hydrogen sulfide - 15 mg / m3, and carbon dioxide - 0.25%. Dusty air negatively affects the physiological respiratory functions of turkey poults.
Step 3
A prerequisite for keeping young animals is an adjustable light regime. The productivity and physiological state of the bird depends on its duration and intensity. Intermittent light is most effective. From the sixth week of cultivation, an eight-hour daylight hours are maintained. They turn on the light twice a day: at 7 o'clock and 14 o'clock (four hours each). In the first days of life, round-the-clock lighting is required for the chicks to find water and light.
Step 4
Brooders are fenced at a distance of 50 centimeters to retain heat, the height of the fence should be 40-50 centimeters. Cover the litter with cardboard or heavy paper in this area. Remove wet litter (use coniferous wood shavings, fresh straw, chopped corn sticks as litter). Place drinkers and feeders behind the brooder so that they do not interfere with the free movement of chicks. After two weeks of upkeep, the fence is removed.
Step 5
The poultry floor should have a hard surface. Two thirds of the floor should be covered with planks, the remainder with deep bedding. When chicks are kept on mesh or slatted floors, the young grow well, but this can lead to bruised legs and breasts.
Step 6
Turkey poults are quite demanding on the quality of feed. The chicks are fed for the first time no later than 16 hours after hatching. Delay can cause the chicks to peck at the litter. For the first 10 days, feed them 8 times a day (every 2 hours), then reduce them to 7 times. From 20 to 40 days, it is enough to feed 6 times a day.
Step 7
The first days give the chicks eggs, millet, feed mixture, milk powder, wheat bran, cottage cheese. From two weeks of age, include in their diet mixed feed, herbs, herbal flour, shell rock, baker's yeast, reverse, bone meal. It is recommended to add young greens (nettles, clover, forage cabbage, alfalfa, sainfoin) to the feed. Turkeys eagerly eat green onions. Change the water in the drinker regularly. Contaminated, sour and moldy feed is the leading cause of chick mortality.
