The Cornish Rex is difficult to confuse with other cat breeds. They have a very bright appearance and a beautiful curly coat. For the first time this breed began to be bred in 1950, but it was officially registered only 17 years later.
History of the breed
Cats with the distinctive characteristics of the Cornish Rex breed appeared in 1936 in Moravia (Czech Republic). However, the soft curly fur was the cause of their extermination. People thought they were sick with scab. At that time, it was widespread throughout Europe.
After 15 years in the UK, five kittens were born to a domestic cat. One of them turned out to be curly. This immediately caught the attention of breeders. The kitten was named Calibanker. It was he who became the ancestor of the Cornish Rex breed. The name of this breed comes from the County of Cornwall, where the Calibanker was born. The word "rex" means "royal". The kitten's mistress was the first to breed this breed.
Since then, breeders have made great strides in breeding Cornish Rex. Three main species were bred: Cornish, Devonian and German. Crossing them with each other is prohibited by international standards. In 1980, an exhibition was held in America, in which only Cornish Rexes participated. The hearts of the visitors were won by adorable animals with large ears and luxurious coats. After the show, this breed became popular all over the world.
In Russia, the Cornish Rex appeared thanks to I. V. Kharchenko. It was she who brought these amazing animals to Moscow in 1989. On the very first day, there were owners for them. The Cornish Rex found a new home and since then have actively participated in various exhibitions.
Cornish Rex
Anyone who picks up a Cornish Rex for the first time will be very surprised at its weight. He is quite heavy for his height and build. The back is always arched, the lower part of the body follows its curve, which makes the cat look graceful. Legs are slender and thin. The ears seem to be constantly alert due to their large size. They stand out sharply against the background of the muzzle.
The Cornish Rex coat is soft and pleasant to the touch. It covers the body in waves and fits snugly against it, especially on the back. Petting such a cat is a pleasure. The coat on the lower abdomen and neck is very short. Cornish Rex does not shed, however, with age, receding hairline can form, which can significantly reduce the ratings at shows. The tail is very flexible. It tapers smoothly towards the end.
The muzzle of the Cornish Rex tapers slightly towards the nose. The head is usually ovoid. Curved lines give it an oval shape. The forehead is rounded and merges smoothly into the nose. Eye color usually matches the color of the coat. They are very wide apart.
