Most dogs are wonderful mothers, tenderly caring for their offspring. But sometimes it happens that the bitch is very weak after giving birth or she does not have milk. It also happens that a dog dies as a result of a cesarean section. How to feed newborn puppies and prevent their death?
It is necessary
- - syringe or pipette;
- - cotton wool;
- - terry towel
Instructions
Step 1
Try to find a foster mother for your puppy
You should know that newborn puppies are absolutely helpless - they are born deaf and blind. Puppies are not able not only to eat independently, but also to empty from feces and urine. They do all this with the help of their mother. Therefore, the easiest and most rational way to feed a newborn puppy if his mother, for one reason or another, cannot feed him, is to find him a “wet nurse”. It is desirable that the nurse be about the same size as the mother of the puppies. Naturally, she must be absolutely healthy and have a calm character and a pronounced maternal instinct. If you are not sure about the health of the "wet nurse" - show her to the veterinarian.
Step 2
For emergency feeding of a newborn baby, you can prepare a mixture of half a glass of boiled cow's milk and one egg yolk. The amount of formula needed for the first feed depends on the size of the puppy. However, when feeding, one should be guided by the fact that it is better to underfeed than to overfeed the baby. For the first feeding, half a pipette of the formula may be sufficient.
Step 3
Take a syringe and put on it, instead of a needle, a piece of a thin rubber catheter or a rubber tube from a pipette. Remove the plunger and cover the opening of the syringe with your thumb to allow the puppy to suck out the mixture. Keep a close eye on how much the puppy ate. You should know that food should come in small drops, otherwise the baby may choke and die.
Step 4
Take a piece of cotton wool or a soft terry towel. Soak it in warm water and gently massage your baby's belly, mimicking the movement of your dog's tongue. This is necessary for the puppy to empty himself. You should know that without such stimulation, the puppy will suffer from diarrhea, then from constipation.
Step 5
Newborn puppies should be fed every three hours, day and night. For feeding the puppy, it is recommended to use special ready-made mixtures sold in pet stores.
