Often in pets of venerable age, pinching of the vertebrae occurs, which prevents the animal from leading a normal life. Pinching reasons
With local aging of the segments of the spine, degenerative changes occur in it, leading to the formation of osteophytes - bone growths that lead to fusion or pinching of adjacent vertebrae. In addition, bone growths compress the nerve roots, narrowing the spinal canal and causing severe pain that can develop into paralysis. Also, the outer fibers of the annulus fibrosus are affected, as a result of which the dog becomes less mobile.
Most often, pinched vertebrae are observed in dogs whose age has crossed the six-year threshold.
Posture disorders, osteochondrosis, spinal injuries, hypothermia, metabolic disorders and even a hereditary factor can also become the cause of the development of this disease. The main external symptom of pinched vertebrae is the limitation of mobility of the lumbar spine. Soreness and stiffness prevent the dog from jumping and navigating stairs or inclines. It becomes difficult for the animal to stand up, its chest hardens, and the shape of the back can change markedly.
Treatment of pinched vertebrae
To prevent the dog from becoming partially or completely paralyzed, it is necessary to undergo a series of examinations. Usually, a sick pet is prescribed a course of B vitamins and proserin, which restores neuromuscular conductivity. Treatment can be done at home with injections of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers. Also, the veterinarian must prescribe drugs that stimulate the passage of a persistent nerve impulse along the peripheral nerve endings.
With self-diagnosis, pinched vertebrae can be confused with sciatica or lumbago, so do not panic ahead of time.
For the treatment of this disease in dogs, there are such special drugs as "Quadrisol" and "Rimadil". Medicines intended for humans must not be used! They can cause stomach upset and bleeding in animals. A sick dog should be placed in a warm place (but not under a battery!), And walks should be gentle - stairs and sudden movements should be completely excluded. If the animal can no longer walk on its own, you can make a special wheelchair for its weak hind legs, which will make it feel more independent and active.
