Has your beloved hamster safely escaped from home? If he has lived with you for a long time and is used to his hands, voice and his nickname, he may himself return to the house in a day or even a few hours of wandering around the apartment. But what if this did not happen?
Develop a capture strategy
You should not worry about your hamster, if he hid well, he can calmly exist outside his house for three to four days. Of course, in addition to starvation, the baby can be threatened with many other dangers, so after you discover the loss, try not to slam doors or move furniture to find it - this way the rodent can be accidentally crippled or even crushed. The best way to catch is by unfolding the baits. Overwhelmed by the feeling of hunger, your pet will get out of the shelter for the smell of food and will be detected.
However, do not think that the hamster will jump out to you with a joyful squeak as soon as you put the treat on the floor. There are a few things to keep in mind when developing your capture strategy. Firstly, if you do not know exactly which of the rooms the escaped hamster is in, the range of searches should be expanded, and the baits should be spread out in several places. Secondly, keep in mind that usually rodents come out of their hiding places at night, so you should not especially wait for it to appear in daylight.
Bait
So, it makes sense to lay out the first baits for reconnaissance purposes. At night, your fugitive will explore new uncharted territory and be sure to feed himself with what he can discover. If you make it so that the hamster did not have the opportunity to move from room to room, where the treat disappears, the next day you can start the lure operation. To simplify the catching process, you can sprinkle flour on the floor next to each treat. The animal, running along it, will leave you with traces of its paws and, if you are lucky, its location will be easier to figure out.
Be sure to check all the containers and grooves where the fugitive could climb to you, but could not get back out: vases, opaque containers or boxes. If a cat or dog lives in the house, pay special attention to it during the period of catching the hamster. It is better to close the cat away from the room where your saboteur is hiding, no matter how she resists it, but just watch the dog more carefully.
Hamster trap
If you have a small animal recently, the tendency to escape is much more developed in it, and you will have to catch it yourself. Today in pet stores you can find special traps that are just designed for such purposes. That is, the rodent falls into the trap, but remains alive and well. You can set up a deep bowl or jar of treats in the room by attaching a kind of ladder to the edge of it. The hamster will climb inside, but will not be able to get out back.
