Determining the sex of hamsters is quite difficult, especially when it comes to cubs. Their genitals are too small to be seen with the naked eye, therefore, attempts to be guided by the presence or absence of "manhood" can lead to errors in determining the sex of the animal. Therefore, we must act differently.

Instructions

Step 1

Take your hamster in your hand. Place the animal in the palm of your hand, holding the upper half of the body with your thumb. At the same time, the lower body and hind legs should hang from the palm - this will be the easiest way to examine the structural features of the animal. You must act as carefully as possible so as not to cause pain or inconvenience to the hamster. You can also try to take the hamster "by the scruff" - but this position is usually unpleasant for animals and they begin to wriggle and twitch. And in this case, it is much more difficult to correctly determine the gender.

Step 2

Look at how the genitals and anus are located - it is this sign that will allow you to accurately determine the sex of the animal. And in females, the vagina is located almost close to the anus. In males, the distance between the anus and the urogenital opening is much greater; in adult animals, it can reach 1.5 centimeters.

Step 3

Another difference is the skin in the genital area. In females in this place you can see a "bald spot", in males, the skin in the area of the urogenital openings is covered with wool.

Step 4

In short-haired hamsters (especially if they are older than a month), other sexual characteristics can also be considered. So, in females on the stomach, you can see the nipples located in two rows. And in sufficiently mature males, small testicles can be found at the very base of the tail. They do not form immediately, so they are completely invisible in the young.
