There are many different types of monkeys. Some of them are known to most people, others are less famous. For example, not many people know who the vervet are. This monkey species inhabits the African continent.
Vervet monkeys are a species of monkeys that belong to the family of monkeys, the order of primates. The vervet has similar external qualities to the green monkey, but has a different color of the coat, namely, the vervet has dark limbs and hair in the tail area with a red tint.
As for the appearance of vervettes, they have a black oblong muzzle. Males can be easily distinguished from females by the presence of a blue scrotum in the former. Adult males reach a body weight of up to 8 kilograms, and the body length ranges from 42 to 60 cm. Females have a body weight half as much as males.
Vervettes are characterized by a diurnal lifestyle. These animals live in flocks in nature. There is a clear hierarchy in the flocks.
This type of monkey can make certain sounds, which can signal a warning of danger. When seeing predators such as a leopard, eagle, or snake, the vervet uses special distinctive signals. The main food of monkeys is a variety of fruits, figs, leaves and seeds of plants. Eating eggs of birds and young chicks, as well as insects, is an integral part of the diet.
Vervettes live mainly in the districts of southern and eastern Africa, in the range from Ethiopia and Somalia to South Africa. Less and less of this species of monkeys can be found, moving to the western part of the East African Rift. Primates are so accustomed to adapting to different habitats that they can settle even in conditions where the level of vegetation is low.
