It is impossible to calmly walk past a Shar Pei dog. This unique pleated dog will win any heart. The breed with the original appearance was exported from China, where it was considered a guard and fighting breed. Shar Pei is an ancient breed, but for some time it was "forgotten", and more recently it has again become quite popular among dog lovers.
Appearance
Shar Pei are medium-sized dogs, reaching about half a meter at the withers, and weighing 18-25 kg. The constitution of these dogs is muscular, strong, with broad shoulders and a chest that looks a little square. The head of the Shar Pei is large and raised high. His eyes are small, dark, deep-set, which gives this breed a certain harshness. The ears of the dog are small and triangular, close to the head. The tongue is dark blue. The coat is short and stiff, not shiny. Shar Pei is named so precisely because of the wool that looks like sand. This dog has a lot of skin, from the head to the paws. It forms numerous folds, but smoothes out with age. The Shar Pei's tail is curled into a ringlet and curved over the back. The color can be different, but not white.
The character of the dog "in a fold"
Shar Pei, despite their gloomy and stern expression on the muzzle, are very friendly and sociable dogs. They are loyal to their master, playful with children and other animals. It happens that earlier rejection from the mother and brothers leads to the fact that they do not know how to behave in society. Therefore, from an early age it is worth teaching the puppy to be friends.
Shar Pei is very independent and likes to dominate. From the first days in the house, it is worth showing him that you are the owner, otherwise he himself will take on the role of the alpha male.
These dogs are reliable and intelligent. Their vigilance is so developed that even in a dream, the dog tirelessly monitors the security of the house and owners. Even with a small threat to its owner, the Shar Pei is able to instantly react and defend itself. Dogs of this breed are confident in themselves and in their abilities, they are energetic and frisky. Shar Pei will behave carefully and arrogantly with strangers, looking down on them. They will take caresses from them like a king, as if it should be so.
Although this breed is fighting, but in the family it is playful, kind and inventive in relationships. These dogs are easily trainable and quickly remember what can and cannot be done in the house.
Shar Pei care and maintenance
Caring for this breed of dog is not difficult. Sharpei do not need to be washed often, because they do not like water. The wool will have to be combed out more often to remove dead hairs.
You cannot wash the dog's head. If water gets into your ears, inflammation will begin. Shar-Pei ears are delicate, with thin auditory canals. They need to be cleaned once a week, carefully checking for plaque or an unpleasant odor.
When bathing the dog, it is necessary to thoroughly rinse the folds from the shampoo to prevent skin inflammation from developing. It is imperative to dry the Shar Pei after bathing, while applying powder or talcum powder between the folds to prevent skin diseases.
Walking with this breed of dog should be long and physically active. The more the dog runs outside, the calmer it will be at home. Shar Pei do not tolerate heat, so you should not walk with them during the day. It is better to postpone walks to a cooler time of the day.
