The guinea pig is a good-natured and calm pet. It is believed that pigs are more unpretentious than dogs or cats. But some procedures for caring for them must be followed so that the animal is healthy and vigorous. For example, the claws of a pig require attention: once or twice a year they must be trimmed, since the claws of domestic rodents do not naturally grind off. Too long claws can cause inconvenience, pain, and even make it difficult for the pig to move.
It is necessary
- - special tweezers or scissors for cutting nails (they can be purchased at a veterinary pharmacy);
- - bright lamp or flashlight;
- - an assistant who could hold the pig;
- - disinfectant and hemostatic agent in case of damage to blood vessels.
Instructions
Step 1
Ask a helper to hold the pig in front of the light source so that you can take it by the paw and see the claw in the light. This is necessary in order not to touch the blood vessels when clipping the claws. Determine the place to which you can trim the claw: this should be its transparent part, fully visible to the light. If the claws of the animal are dark, highlight them from below with a spotlight. Trimming the claws alone is only worth it if you already know how to do it well enough, and the pig is very calm.
Step 2
Trim the claw within one third of its length. Try to position the tool so that the cutting edge is across the claw, otherwise the claw may crack. Hold the pig gently but firmly. No matter how peaceful animal she is, the procedure is unpleasant for her, and the pig will most likely try to escape, or free her paw. Trim the rest of the claws in the same way.
