An external filter for an aquarium produces chemical and mechanical water purification. Typically, this type of filter is installed on aquariums with a volume of 200 liters or more. For very large aquariums, multiple filters may be required. These devices belong to a high price category, so you can try to make such a filter yourself.
Instructions
Step 1
Select a cylindrical plastic part for the filter housing. For these purposes, a piece of plastic sewer pipe is suitable. The length of the pipe fragment must be at least half a meter. For the case, you will need plastic parts that act as a cover and bottom. Make a hole in the bottom of the case. Screw the fitting into this hole. It can be bought ready-made or taken from another device, for example, from a sensor from the heating boiler of a bus. Then you will need FUM tape to seal the threads. Wrap it around the thread of the fitting. Secure the union with the supplied nut inside the filter housing.
Step 2
Cut a circle out of the plastic. Use a drill or knife to make many medium-sized holes in it. Place a circle on the bottom of the filter. Thanks to it, the lower filter opening will not be very clogged.
Step 3
We proceed with the installation of the filter filler. Place a round piece of foam on top of the plastic circle. Pour a special water filtration filler on top of the foam rubber, which you can buy at a pet store. It is made of ceramic material. Repeat the layers again. Foam rubber first, and then a ceramic biofilter.
Step 4
An electric pump is installed on top of the filtering layers. It is she who will create the movement of water from bottom to top. For a wire with a switch that comes from the pump, make a hole in the plastic case. Seal the hole with sealant.
Step 5
Prepare two tubes. They can be plastic. With the help of them, water will enter the filter and return it to the aquarium. Connect one tubing to the lower outlet. A special faucet must be connected to the lower tube, which will remove air from the external filter. Connect the other tube to the top cover of the filter to the fitting. Submerge the tubes into the aquarium. Now you can turn on the ready-made external filter and test it in action.
