We all know how to collect a urine sample: in the morning, the middle portion of urine is collected in a clean glass or plastic container. But what if the patient is a cat?
Instructions
Step 1
Is your cat used to going to the litter box and has the doctor ordered a urinalysis? What should be done in this case? You can try the path of least resistance: remove the litter, wash the tray thoroughly and replace it, or replace it with a clean mesh tray. In the morning, invite your cat to go to an empty litter box. If everything worked out, pour the contents into a clean glass container or a special plastic container with a lid. Done! Urine for analysis must be delivered as quickly as possible, the results of the study are accurate if no more than two hours have passed since the moment of urine collection. The optimal volume is 20-100 ml.
Step 2
Instead of filler, a small amount of paper can be crumbled into the tray. Take white paper for the printer (newsprint will not work, it is dyed) and place it in the mesh tray. Large pet stores sell special plastic granules that mimic the filler, they are included in the kit for collecting urine from cats. If such a kit is not available, use clean aquarium soil or replace the filler with foam balls. Then collect the urine in a glass jar using a large syringe.
Step 3
If your cat turned out to be more stubborn, option one is to watch. Pour litter into the litter box and let the cat go to the toilet. Keep a flat cup ready. As soon as the cat sits down "in a small way" substitute the dishes under the stream. This option is good because the analysis is clean. And the psyche of the animal is not injured. It is inconvenient if your pet's litter box is in a hard-to-reach place. Then all that remains is to lift the cat by the scruff right in the process of urinating, which can lead to unpleasant consequences. For example, the refusal of a cat to go to the toilet in the same place and puddles in the corners all over the house.
Step 4
Diseases of the genitourinary organs often lead to difficulty in urinating or even its impossibility. The fact that the pet has not escaped your attention somewhere in a secluded place can be reliably determined by the tense abdominal wall and the palpable filled bladder. Under the fingers at the base of the abdomen, it looks like a dense rubber bulb. Feeling, do not crush too much, you can harm the cat. The veterinarian will place the catheter and draw the required amount of urine for analysis himself. Sometimes urine is drawn with a syringe, piercing the abdominal wall with a needle (cystostomy).
