The water turns green, sometimes becomes cloudy, and the walls of the aquarium, plants and stones are overgrown with an unsightly coating or dirty threads. It is not possible to completely remove algae in the aquarium, but if appropriate measures are taken in time, their growth can be limited.

Blue-green algae in the aquarium grow under intense lighting. Therefore, the fight against them must begin with a decrease in daylight hours to 8 hours, a complete replacement of natural light with artificial light. Brown algae, on the contrary, love low lighting, and they need to be dealt with by increasing the intensity of the lamps.

It is important to ensure that the fish eat up all the food, as rotting debris only contributes to the nutrition and unwanted growth of lower plants.

You can plant competitors of algae in the aquarium - higher fast-growing plants and create good conditions for them to grow, and reduce the number of fish for a while. At the same time, replace a tenth of the water every day and clean the soil.

There are fish that feed on algae, for example, Siamese or Chinese algae eaters, ototsinklus, flying chanterelles, plecostomus catfish. Even live-bearers, such as mollies and patrons, actively eat filamentous growths.

Chemical treatment of the aquarium is very effective. There are many drugs that work to kill algae, but after a while, the algae will begin to take over the aquarium again, emerging from the surviving spores. In addition, some plants cannot withstand chemical poisoning and die.

A laborious but safe method of dealing with some algae is to manually remove them by scraping off the walls with a scraper or winding long threads on a stick.
