Wolverine is a predatory animal, akin to martens, covered with thick brown fur. It feeds on meat from hunted animals and carrion. As an addition to the menu, wolverine eats berries, plant seeds, roots, fish, and insects.
What a beast wolverine
Wolverine is a large representative of the weasel squad. The wolverine has a massive physique, a small head, short strong legs. The animal has a thick brown fur that does not get wet, does not cake and does not infect. On the sides of the body, there are marks of light brown or straw color. An adult wolverine reaches the size of an average dog. Due to its external resemblance, it is often compared to a bear.
These predators do not live in one place, but lead a nomadic lifestyle, bypassing their vast territory. During the breeding season, wolverines dig holes, similar to bear dens, where they breed their offspring. They live alone, only occasionally several individuals unite to drive large prey.
The wolverine is a very successful predator. Despite the outward clumsiness, it is a dexterous and strong beast. Wolverine is good at climbing trees and walking even in very deep snow.
The main weapon of the wolverine is the semi-retractable claws, with which it can not only kill prey, but also tear apart the wooden walls of hunting sheds in which meat is stored.
Wolverine food
Wolverine nutrition depends on the season. In winter, it is mainly meat of ungulates: deer, elk, roe deer, mountain goats. The wolverine can pursue its prey for several days. The goal of the predator is to drive the prey into deep snow. Even red deer can become a victim of a wolverine.
Like the wolf, the wolverine hunts weakened, sick or young animals. Therefore, she is considered the orderly of the forest. This representative of the weasel does not disdain the carrion left after the meal of wolves or bears. The corpses of dead animals form the basis of the wolverine's diet. With powerful jaws, she can gnaw any frozen meat and crush bones.
It often takes prey from weaker predators, such as foxes or lynxes. Checks hunting traps, eating animals and birds that have got there. This habit of the wolverine is very annoying for hunters. Wolverines hunt and live in the forest, but if hunger comes, they can go to the forest-steppe and planting.
In spring and summer, wild bird eggs, spawned salmon, berries, seeds, roots, nuts, small rodents and insect larvae are added to the predator's menu. The animal's stomach can hold up to two kilograms of meat. But usually the animal eats no more than seven hundred and fifty grams, and bites the rest into pieces and hides it in reserve, away from the place of the meal.
