Diagnosis of pregnancy in domestic farm animals is quite important, since without this it is simply impossible to carry out routinely and normally work in livestock farming. There are several methods for determining the pregnancy of a sow: laboratory, clinical and visual.
Instructions
Step 1
To determine pregnancy, it is necessary to use an external study method, which, however, will be effective only at the end of the pig's pregnancy. For research, gently and without using force (scratching the sides and abdomen), lay the pig on its side. Then carefully probe the anterior abdominal wall. This should be done at the level of the last two nipples, just above the breast. In doing so, you will be able to feel the fruits.
Step 2
On the third to fifth day after mating the pig, you can determine the presence of pregnancy by cheesy vaginal discharge. The sow lies more, appetite appears, becomes rather lazy. If the pig no longer goes for mating and does not "walk" for eighteen to twenty days, we can say with almost one hundred percent certainty that it is pregnant. In the last month of gestation (pigs carry their offspring for an average of 115 days), there is an active hyperemia of the udder and an increase in colostrum separation.
Step 3
Often, the rectal method is used to determine pregnancy in a pig. Thanks to this method, it is possible to determine pregnancy already after three weeks, after six weeks with greater accuracy. After emptying the intestine from excrement, put on rubber gloves and proceed to palpation during the period of intestinal relaxation. The external artery has an iliac diameter and gradually thickens during pregnancy. By the end of the first month of wearing, you can feel the vibration of the middle uterine artery, a weak pulsation is felt in the urogenital artery.
Step 4
In laboratory and clinical conditions, the most promising method is used, which determines the pregnancy of a pig with one hundred percent accuracy. For this, ultrasound is used to determine the pulsation of the fetus in the pig's uterus. Also in practice, the vaginal biopsy method is used to establish pregnancy. A small piece of epithelial tissue is taken from the anterior vaginal wall with a small instrument and examined under a microscope. This method is absolutely safe for the pig and fetus, and does not require special training.
